Johnny takes his young charge through an object lesson in speedy shopping... and it's about time, my friends! The first ever episode of JC, from July 2004. Recorded pretty much on the hoof (as if you couldn't tell). Johnny had this to say: "Sometimes you really do have to take a stand. The bus was quite packed, you see. But we got there in the end. The bright lights of supermarket heaven beckoned from out of the evening gloom. I had some work to do, tutoring my latest charge in the fine art of the trolley dash. It had all started with an email from a guy down in Devon. Well, I say email, more a group of mails from it felt like everybody in this bloke's address book. Now, I get plenty of enquiries from people who want to take a one-to-one lesson with the old JC, and there's many ways you can rise to the top of the pile. The first is to be a bird. Or a fox. Equal opportunities and all that. One of the other ways is to make such a bloody nuisance of yourself that you have to be seen. This case was definitely one of the latter. The key thing about the trolley dash is time. I can't emphasise that enough. Once you get inside that space under the bright lights with the smell of bagels and fishcakes wafting around your snotholes, you have no friends until you get back outside. The only thing you can rely on is the watch round your wrist as it ticks off the seconds of your challenge. There is stuff. There is your trolley. You have to pick out the right stuff and get it into that trolley. And fast. There's no time for fannying around looking at labels for the best before date. There's a very simple question: Do I need this item? Remember that question. You'll need it. That's the kind of advice that makes me a lifestyle guru."

This is the second part of the tibetan buddhist ceremony involving the dissolution of the sand Mandala (tib. Kilkhor) of "Avalokiteshvara", the compassionate aspect of enlightenment. This simple -rather touching- ceremony was held in Bologna on the 6th of January 2009 by three venerable monks from the monastery of Gaden Jangtse (Kamataka - South India) with the personal blessings of Gyalwa Rinpoche Yeshe Norbu, the Dalai Lama. A sand Mandala is a symbolic map of the entire universe, viewed through the eyes of an enlightened being (in this case, the Yidam or meditational deity "Avalokiteshvara"). By meditating upon this drawing, the practitioner can gradually transform his view of the universe into the one portrayed in the Mandala, becoming enlightened himself in the aspect of Avalokiteshvara. Here you can see the venerable Geshe prostrating to Avalokiteshvara, then, after wearing his yellow hat of the Gelug school, circumambulating the sacred Mandala three times offering incense (Sanskrit: Dhupe) and flowers (Sanskrit: Pushpe).
