Hartsfield-Jackson is improving and expediting the travel experience for its more than 250,000 customers who fly through the worlds busiest airport each day by adding 10 new and more efficient security lanes today. With the addition of four new lanes in Terminal South and six new lanes in Terminal North, customers now have the choice of a total of 32 lanes at three separate checkpoints. Hartsfield-Jacksons goal is to exceed our customers expectations, and these new security checkpoint areas, security lanes and more convenient screening procedures will decrease checkpoint wait times, said Ben DeCosta, aviation general manager. During the traditionally busy 100 Days of Summer this year, we managed to reduce the number of wait times exceeding 20 minutes by almost 90 percent over last year. This $26 million investment will further enhance the overall efficiency of our airport making for an even more hassle-free experience for our customers. The opening of the new lanes coincides with the Transportation Security Administrations (TSA) launch of its Diamond Self-Select program in Atlanta, adding to customers choice of where to enter security checkpoints. We are pleased to introduce the Diamond Self-Select lane program to Hartsfield-Jackson today as part of the overall expansion and improvement of the security checkpoint area, said Gerald Chapman, TSA Central Area director. Allowing passengers to select lanes based on their needs and experience creates a calmer and more efficient checkpoint, enhancing security as a result. Self-Select lanes are designated by easy-to-spot signage that directs passengers based on their personal travel needs and knowledge. Signage for the self-select lanes resembles familiar snow skiing icons that guide travelers to choose the appropriate lane based on their travel skill and experience level. The three self-select categories are: •Black Diamond for expert, elite or frequent business travelers •Blue Square for more casual travelers with carry on baggage and a basic understanding of security requirements •Green Circle for those flying with young children in strollers or who might have special needs The premium passenger lanes for airline customers are now located alongside the TSAs Black Diamond lanes at the North Security Checkpoint and are inclusive as part of the Black Diamond lanes at the South Security Checkpoint. The Airport and TSA have been excellent partners in working to address issues surrounding security wait times, and the completion of this project represents yet another milestone surrounding these efforts, said Greg Kennedy, Deltas vice president of Airport Customer Service. Deltas investment in this project falls in line with our goal of streamlining the travel experience for our passengers, which has included efforts at reducing security wait times and the introduction of online and kiosk check-in options. Our goal at AirTran Airways is to make the travel experience as convenient as possible for our passengers and reducing wait times at security checkpoints will make travel an easier experience, said Rick Pelc, general manager of the Atlanta station for AirTran Airways. This initiative is a major achievement for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the TSA as a part of their ongoing efforts to make passenger security a more efficient process. We applaud their efforts on behalf of our customers. Hartsfield-Jackson offers pre-screening convenience for international travelers U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is also now offering its Global Entry Program at Hartsfield-Jackson for select U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents aged 14 years and older. The program grants participants the convenience of pre-screening and exemption from routine questioning to expedite their entry into the United States. This new voluntary program, requiring an enrollment fee, expedites clearance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Upon arrival, registered participants will use a self-service kiosk to report their arrival, scan their passport or permanent residency card, submit their fingerprints for biometric verification, and make a CBP declaration at the touch-screen kiosk. The kiosk then takes a digital photograph of the traveler as part of the transaction record, issues a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to baggage claim and the exit. However, Global Entry participants may be selected randomly by CBP officers for additional screening at any time in the Customs process.

This book is unnerving, arresting, and, ultimately, very relevant."

CHAN: A Beijing woman's died from the bird flu virus, yet despite this Communist China's denying there being any indication of an outbreak. The Ministry of Agriculture says experts found no trace of the deadly H5N1 virus after searching Tianjin city, where a 19-year-old woman reportedly bought and gutted ducks, before passing away. A spokesman was swift to say the case would be closed within seven days if no further evidence is found. This comes almost a year since China declared the bird flu had been eradicated. Experts believe this latest incident reveals holes in surveillance of the virus. Part of the problem lies in that hundreds of millions of farmers raise poultry in their backyard, complicating the process.

Praying in defiance of Israel's war in Gaza - 09 Jan 09

سكان غزة يصلون في في حطام مسجد في تحدى لقوات الإحتلال More than a dozen mosques have been hit in the course of Israel's war on Gaza. But two weeks into the war, Muslim worshippers have not been deterred by the destruction, or the risks of going to pray at what could be a potential target. "The status quo has failed. The American policy toward Israel and Palestine has done nothing except prolong the suffering of the Palestinian people and enable the Israelis to keep an iron grip on the West Bank while at the same time sealing off Gaza and its 1.5 million people. "We desperately need a new American approach that is unbiased and gives equal consideration to both sides." Aviva Cantor of New York City summarized the Israeli and Gaza dark days of war succinctly in the Times on January 4: "The tragedy is that the international community did not accurately analyze the situation and push effectively for the renewal of the cease fire -- and include in its enforcement provisions. "This is what it must do before the war escalates to the point where a truce will be impossible to negotiate and enforce -- with disastrous international consequences." Christian D. Van Dyck of Gardiner, Maine, in his January 4 letter stated his viewpoint on the relentlessly raging conflict: "For the last several decades, the Israeli government has used disproportionate force against Palestinians and encroached further and further into their territories, yet America remains silent. "For too long America has been a bad friend of Israel. It is a sad fact that those in America who have voiced criticism of Israel have been largely muted by the American media, or worse branded as anti-Semitic. "Israel and America are becoming further isolated from the rest of the world." "Israel's attacks in the Gaza Strip will only beget further hatred in the region. It is time for America to be a true friend of Israel." Ben Kreilkamp of Minneapolis shared his viewpoint on the Israeli and Gaza war in the Times on January 5: "Regarding `In Israel, Bloomberg shows his support.' "Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York City is quoted as saying, 'I think I speak for an awful lot of Americans, who think that Israel is doing the right thing in defending Israel "There are few who would argue with that statement as it stands. "Israel indeed is entirely justified in defending itself. What is at question is the way Israel is defending itself. What possible good will come of laying siege to a population, reducing it to hopelessness, radicalizing generations of its youth, fulfilling the most frightful image in its own most fearful mirror, and trying to bomb it into submission? "Clearly, Israel's policies fit hand in glove with those in Hamas. That is in fact the way war works, and it is increasingly clear that war is not the answer. "We can't afford it, it does no good, it leads to more war, it is a helpless and fearful response to helplessness and fear." With the past 8 horrifying years of the Bush reign of error and the terror of the Iraq War is the last thing the U.S. needed to cope with. One might hope the U.S. would at the very least call for cessation of hostilities and appeal to diplomacy and negotiate to stop the horrifying death scenes of civilians -- men, women and children caught in the crossfire of what is nearing a massacre. But Bush remains silent As for his legacy, both George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush declare future historians will credit Bush with a positive assessment of his White House years of residency. However, many millions throughout the world are aghast at what the unneeded Iraq War has accomplished with its death toll, destruction and debt. And now with the U.S. economy sinking into the abyss of over a $10 trillion debt, and men of great wealth committing suicide now that their corruption is being uncovered in colossal investment scandals, two interrelated questions must be asked: What on earth will happen next in the bankrupt U.S.A.? How much more must the U.S. borrow from China, Saudi Arabia and Japan to keep two wars going and U.S. credit from collapsing completely?
