A tale that should have touched me but never even got close. For Somethings Sake Ode to Caylee Never Found At the end of the rainbow, the pot of gold That jingles soft and mocks The legends and heroes of old That could not find it- Has been found. I found it, incidentally More or less accidentally. I was walking around in the county park A peaceful walk beside the lake In pondering on some Godforsaken dream That my heart seemed to deem As more important than the requirements of reality. So it was three in the morn, you see, For I could not sleep, and It was too early to weep For some lost cause, Bout which I did not know. And as I pondered on that dream I realized- though all was well Within the ponderings of my mind, In a world where lungs need air It was nothing of the kind. I had slipped and fallen in the lake In an unlit world of three oclock, And all of a sudden the game was changed And I flung my arms for somethings sake, But estranged by God, I sunk like a rock And lay in purple splendor. So there I was, Three in the morn, Dead as a doornail, if eer a doornail lived To tell a tale as mine. And it was then that I opened my eyes. I found myself sitting cross-legged On the murky lakes rocky floor And before me was that pot of gold That shimmered and gleamed with a glory That I never expected to find so alive And yet so old In the corner of a murky lake. So this- this was the place that in lore was told To be the place where one might find The joy and love Of a hundred lives! So, flooded by desire To have all the coin on the earth, I started towards that pot of gold With nothing less but the life of a God In heart and in mind, For this would be my future- Indeed. I had found the leprechauns gem That even Odysseus had never found At the end of a rainbow That could not be seen in such a dark and lightless world As three oclock in the morn. And I curled hands into fists of fire As I swam through the lake to this Lord of all Desires. Then before that pot of Godly gold, I stretched out my hand that stunk beneath the water Of greed and lust for Something more than power. And as I lifted the lid of that pot, The fairy dust flew And the sight before me drew me further in To this trap of the Irish charm. For the gold was molten. Molten, hot, and on the flame That burns beneath the water In that murky lake whose name I cannot recall. But gold it was, and gold I saw- The purest gold in the universe, Twas the well of eternal Happiness. For pure is pure, And from any part of pure you draw, It is the same as any other part Of purity- For this is the law of the land. But a castle of sand Shall never hold in the rain. So when I touched that molten gold, For my hands could not bear to stay celibate, It was, to my surprise, not like the handshake of the Devil, But cold, cold as the flesh Of the smiling politician of old, Cryogenically stilling my soul And sucking up its blood and guts And spilling them upon the floor For the world to see. But there was nobody to see. No glory in my fall. For the sky was dark and the clock stood still at three. And the Sadness looked at me. The purest gold in the universe- Twas the well of eternal Sadness. Purely impure, For in Sadness there was the hate That dwelt in the leprechauns heart when it Tossed a bag of that Which was once designed to be loved On all accounts. But that leprechaun filled with hate Never heard that rule until it was too late. For in Sadness there was also vengeance, Deep within the catacombs of Hell Watching that leprechaun, Watching it well, And waiting. Their voices called for me- They sang: Find that beast And let it hang! But Ah! Alas, I could not move, For this heart could not be moved By such insignificant evils That may never even have been made. For I was dead as a doornail At the bottom of a murky lake Whose name I did not know. And with woe I remembered that Godforsaken dream That had woken me And made me find this pot of gold. For the legends and heroes of old, They were not fools! Else they would not be legends. They all new the lake where that leprechaun Had trashed a soul for somethings sake A long, long time ago. So now- the children sing of a new kind of Sadness. Sadness for a death that nobody ever saw, That in all its glory was nothing Compared to the spirit of the leprechauns youth. For in the should-be bitter end, it was a simple reality That what must have been In that pot of gold Had never been there at all. And the dream was what Brought me to see the truth, While the truth was what Brought the Sadness To see a dream.
