GAINESVILLE, FL — A blond girl heads from a playground into a women's restroom. A scruffy man, lurking outside, darts in behind her. "Your City Commission Made This Legal," the words on the TV screen read. The dark ad came from opponents of a gender identity provision added last year to the city's anti-discrimination ordinance, which now allows the city's roughly 100 transgender residents to use whichever restroom they're most comfortable using. Click here to watch the ad. Foes want to repeal the new protection with a March 24 ballot measure that has divided Gainesville, a generally gay-friendly university city surrounded by staunchly conservative north Florida. Those who support the transgender protections say their opponents are really unleashing a broader attack on the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender individuals in general. The city commission approved the restroom provision by a 4-3 vote a year ago. Before the ink could dry, Bible-quoting opponents angrily began working for its repeal. "You are trying to operate in a realm you do not have the authority to operate in," one pastor, George Brantley, told the commissioners. The debate is expected to become noisier as the ballot nears with opponents resorting to more TV ads and campaigns pegged to such slogans as "Keep Men out of Women's Restrooms and vice versa." Organizations defending transgender rights are mustering their own campaign. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force notes 108 cities and counties nationwide have similar transgender protections. An attempt to repeal an ordinance in Montgomery County, Md., failed when a court ruled opponents did not collect enough signatures to place it on the ballot. Citizens for Good Public Policy, the group behind the commercial that aired last summer in Gainesville, collected more than 6,000 signatures last summer to win a referendum. If approved, the repeal measure would also prevent the commission from adding protections beyond what the state requires: race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability and marital status. Cain Davis, chairman of Citizens for Good Public Policy, said the issue is about regulating a "government gone wild" and ensuring public safety, charging that sexual predators could now simply enter a women's restroom claiming to be a transgender individual. "We know when men go into women's restrooms, bad things can happen," Davis said. City Commissioner Crag Lowe, leader of a group called Equality is Gainesville's Business, called the ads from Davis' group a grossly distorted attempt to whip up fears. Lowe's group believes anti-discrimination protections for people who change their sexual orientation are good for business and foster diversity. He noted that 433 of the Fortune 500 companies have policies covering sexual orientation and 153 cover gender identity. Since the ordinance took effect, police have reported no problems in public restrooms stemming from the law. Retired postal worker Donna Lee, who became a female with surgery in 2001, moved to Gainesville from Ocala last March after hearing about the anti-discrimination ordinance. The 60-year-old is working to save the protections. "We just want to live our lives with the basic civil rights that everyone else has," Lee said. But some are taking no chances. Computer programmer Clare Holman, who was born male but now lives as a female, said she simply stays away from public toilets.

"It is so much more than disappointment," explains Abir, a Gazan now living in the West Bank city of Ramallah. "In my worst nightmares I never imagined that Gaza would literally be slaughtered and the West Bank would be quiet." While protests against the Israeli assaults on Gaza have surged across the world in the past week, Ramallah - the demonstration capital of the West Bank - has been relatively quiet. At one point, a protest in Tel Aviv drew 10,000 people while a demonstration in Ramallah the day before drew a fraction of that number. It is not that residents of Ramallah are indifferent to the bombardment in Gaza. "All the people, all day, are watching what is happening in Gaza and thinking about it and asking why," says Manal Mustafa, a 26-year-old from Ramallah. "In our homes, we are watching 24-hour TV." Latest news and analysis from Gaza and Israel Send us your views and videos Watch our coverage of the war on Gaza "We can do nothing," says 23-year-old Hiba. "We just sit in our houses and pray." Her friend, 17-year-old Mirna, agrees. "Our voices don't count," she says. "We can scream and scream about it and no-one will listen to us." Others say that it is Palestinian Authority policing of demonstrations that has put people off publically showing solidarity with Gaza. "We think that the PA is trying to keep control of everything," says one 18-year-old member of a Fatah youth organisation. "They worry that if we demonstrate in support for Gaza, we will attack the PA and they are afraid of that." Two men from Jenin agree. "It's clear that the PA wants to keep everything calm and prevents people from demonstrating," says one. "I am so ashamed and angry that we cannot show our solidarity with Gaza. It doesn't mean that we support Hamas - but in the end we are all the same nation, and what happens to them also happens to us." Participants in a demonstration in Ramallah's Manara square last Friday say that a group of Hamas flag-wavers were swiftly corralled and arrested by PA police, some in plain-clothing. Others angrily point out that all attempts to demonstrate at Israeli checkpoints have been curtailed by PA forces, while yesterday a student protest at Bir Zeit university resulted in several injuries after stringent policing. A spokesman for the PA's interior ministry says that the aim is not to dissuade protest. "There have been a lot of demonstrations in all the cities of the West Bank," he says. "Nothing has prevented any of the demonstrators from expressing themselves clearly against Israeli aggression and the massacres perpetrated in Gaza." The PA wants to show Palestinian unity, he adds, which is why both Fatah and Hamas flags have been discouraged. The authorities are anxious to avert confrontation with Israeli security forces in the West Bank. "We are not at peace with the Israelis - we are still under occupation," he says. "But we don't want to open another front in the West Bank against the Israelis. This is not our purpose and not our policy." But if Palestinians are not demonstrating in their thousands, they are showing support and solidarity with Gaza in other ways - using new technology to arrange actions and initiatives. Widely circulated emails provide Gaza area phone codes and encourage West Bank Palestinians to randomly phone numbers to contact and support Gazans. The phone number that the Israeli army text-messaged to Gazans asking for information about Hamas is sent to West Bank mobiles, with the request to jam the line with threats and hoax calls. Email boxes are crammed with requests from West Bank aid organisations that are desperately trying to get medical and food supplies into Gaza. Some Palestinians in Ramallah are angry with Hamas. "They are responsible for what is happening in Gaza, they didn't renew the ceasefire with Israel," says 44-year-old Abel Aziz from a village near Ramallah. But some of those who did not back Hamas before the Israeli attacks on Gaza are now behind them. "We support anyone who is a member of the resistance," says one man. "We didn't support Hamas before, but now we have to - it is our obligation." Another man, 50-year-old Abu Thayer, puts it another way. "I am against killing in principle, of Palestinians or of Jews," he says. "Now we are watching Palestinian kids being killed on the television and it hurts," he says. "I support my people - and Hamas is part of my people."

Cristiano Ronaldo has escaped unhurt after crashing his Ferrari sports car into a roadside barrier in a tunnel near Manchester airport. The car was badly damaged when it was involved in the accident at 10.20am today on the A538 Wilmslow Road, but the 23-year-old Manchester United winger was not injured. Ronaldo was on his way to training when the accident occurred, but he later arrived at the ground and took part in the training session. His car crashed in the tunnel which takes traffic under the airport runways between Wilmslow and Hale, Cheshire. Witnesses said Ronaldo got out of the car and stood beside the wreckage, apparently not injured in the incident. The car, registered in his home country of Portugal, is part of a fleet owned by Ronaldo. The Portuguese winger was spoken to at the scene by police investigating the incident. It is understood no other vehicles were involved but the aftermath of the crash was seen by a fellow United player. The United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was travelling behind Ronaldo, at the wheel of his own Bentley, at the time of the accident. It is understood the players were making their way from their homes in Cheshire to United's Carrington training complex. A witness described how the front edge of the sports car had been demolished while one of the front wheels had sheared off and could be seen 200 yards away from the scene. A rear tyre was flat. The witness said: "I got there just after the accident had happened and saw the state of the car. It is amazing he got out of it without a scratch." A spokesman for Greater Manchester police said: "We are investigating a road traffic collision in the airport tunnel on the A538. It appears a Ferrari has collided with a barrier in the tunnel. Inquiries are continuing. The driver is being spoken to at the scene. It does not appear he has been injured." United confirmed the incident had taken place and that the Ballon d'Or winner was unhurt. A club spokesman said: "He was involved in an incident this morning. No other cars were involved. He's fine and is training as normal with the team this morning." Ronaldo appeared as a substitute last night in United's 1-0 Carling Cup semi-final first-leg defeat at Derby County. The next leg is played at Old Trafford in a fortnight.
